Resisting the Urge to Buy Shoes

polka-dot-heels

I just had to say no to these adorable polka dotted shoes.

I did it. Over the Christmas/New Year’s Eve break I resisted the urge to buy a new pair of shoes. I had some support from a friend, but I think all addicts have to start somewhere.

I was in Forever 21 shopping with said friend. She was looking for a New Year’s outfit, I was along for support. Or so I thought. I saw them from across the store: pink platform heels with black polka dots. If you follow me on Pinterest, you will know that I have been OBSESSING over polka dots lately. So naturally I had to have them.

But I also knew we were about to go snowboarding and we just spent all our money on Christmas. So I carried them around with me for a bit. I even texted a picture to my husband to gauge what he would say if I did buy them. The response was less than enthused. And my shopping buddy warned that he would never let me hang out with her again if I came home with shoes.

So I sighed and put them back, and walked slowly away, facing them the whole time. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do in my life. But it was a big accomplishment and I’m really proud at the steps I’ve been taking! So remember, when you can’t walk away from a pair of shoes, dig deep, get some help and move on.

Until next time, shoe lovers!

I was thinking about something I said to a family member yesterday and it kind of made me laugh. I said, “I don’t pick out my outfit then add a pair of shoes; I pick out a pair of shoes then add an outfit.”

I really do. So you know the movies where the woman is trying on everything in her closet trying to decide what to wear for a date and she one by one eliminates them in exasperation? Well that’s me only with shoes.

And what’s worse is I make my husband help me decide. I’ll pick out four pairs that I want to wear that night, bring them all out to the living room where he is trying to watch TV, and try each of them on while saying to him, “These? (while standing on one wobbly foot) or these? (switch to next foot)”. He rolls his eyes and says, “Whatever don’t make you several inches taller than me.”

Then I thought to myself, am I crazy? I want to know if anybody else does this or if it’s just something from a movie?

A few nights ago something happened that I never thought would: I actually let my husband watch Modern Marvels when I was at home. Even crazier, I was the one who really wanted to watch it. There could be only one explanation: it was about shoes.

Of course it wasn’t a fashion show about what’s hot and the latest style, but it was interesting. It explained some of the history of modern work boots and heavy duty shoes. They showed how the shoe itself is made in the factory.

The show started out about Vibram soles, a specific brand that does mostly soles (however they are now popular for their pioneering Vibram Five-Fingers). It was so interesting to see how one of the most durable soles around today is the way it is: durable.

So while the show wasn’t exactly what I typically watch or exactly what I wanted out of it, I still found myself fascinated. Who wouldn’t be interested in the history and making of the very thing they are addicted to buying and wearing?
